MASSACHUSETTS – SALEM, MARBLEHEAD AND BEVERLY HARBORS – Bridge Construction - MassDOT is conducting geotechnical borings to advance the design of the replacement Hall Whitaker (Bridge Street) Bridge (mile 0.6) over the Bass River in Beverly, MA. Test borings will be conducted from August 16 to September 15, 2023. Mariners may incur a delay of up to 60 hours after making a request for an opening to allow the drilling barge to move out of the channel. Requests for openings may be made by calling the MassDOT contracted Bridge Tender at 978-922-7042. The bridge will open on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day with 24 hours advance notice. When the barge is in the channel and the bridge is capable of opening, the horizontal width of the channel will be reduced to approximately 35 feet. Vessels that can pass under the bridge in the closed to navigation position may do so at all times. When the drilling barge is in the channel it will monitor VHF Channels 13/16. The New England Boring Contractors point of contact is Steven Garside at 603-437-1610. Mariners are advised to plan accordingly and exercise caution.
